Solomon Islands lawyers this week have the chance to sharpen their courtroom skills and preparation for cases.
Many of them are taking part in a series of practical hands-on legal training sessions to broaden their knowledge – a key part of Solomon Islands Government work to strengthen to strengthen the justice system. RAMSI is supporting this through its Law and Justice program.
Opening the week-long training program, Solomon Islands Chief Justice Sir Albert Palmer said that regular training was vital to keep on top of what was happening in legal and judicial thought and reasoning in the laws that applied to Solomon Islands and the world around it.
“Part of the skill to being a successful lawyer is being able to have access to the law at your fingertips either retaining it in your mind or being able to find it quickly,” said the Chief Justice.
“We can now read almost any latest judgment in most Commonwealth jurisdictions with a week, in some case, within two days of their release. Such training therefore does help to disseminate such up to date information and knowledge to lawyers.”
RAMSI’s Development Coordinator Blair Exell said that the training would focus on legal skills, cross cultural communication, and how to find the latest information. He said they would get a really practical opportunity to practice their skills in what’s called a ‘moot’ or ‘mock’ court.
Lawyers from the Offices of the Public Solicitor and Public Prosecutions, and the Attorney-General’s Chambers were attending the program. Executive members of the Solomon Islands Bar Association were also invited so they could see the type of training that could be offered to practicing lawyers in Solomon Islands.
“RAMSI is pleased to support this practical initiative which will bring together experienced Solomon Islands lawyers – defenders, prosecutors, magistrates and judges – to host sessions and help in the ‘moot’ court, Mr Exell said.
“Supporting the Solomon Islands Government to continue the legal education of Solomon Islands lawyers is a key part of RAMSI’s Law and Justice Program. We are pleased to contribute to activities which are developing the capacity of local lawyers and strengthening the country’s justice system.”
