After three weeks of patrolling the White River area of Honiara, the Fiji Platoon of RAMSI recently organised a concert for the White River community to thank them for their hospitality and friendliness over the previous weeks.

Fijian contingent commander Captain Osea Tokovou said his troops had very much enjoyed their time among the residents of White River.

“Fijian culture is very similar to the Solomon Islands culture and the Fiji Platoon related very well to the local people,” Captain Tokovou said.

“From conversations and meetings with locals and village chiefs it was suggested that a concert be organised to bring RAMSI and the local community closer together.”

The venue for the concert was the playing fields of White River Community High School. Local school children and parents helped the Fiji Platoon to decorate the school and surrounding areas for the big night which was Saturday 1 July.

The concert titled ‘RAMSI Peace and Unity Awareness Night’, featured talented local groups and cultural dancers, and attracted hundreds of people.

Solomon Islander groups like ‘B do C’, featuring local Solomon Islands personality Tiabon Oge – once a former drug user, now youth worker – performed songs explaining the dangers and side effects of drug use.

Other local Solomon Islands Christian and community groups performed songs from famous groups like Nickelback and The Eagles, along with religious songs that entertained the crowd throughout the evening.

Members of the Solomon Islands Fiji community were well represented with traditional dancing performed by young Fijian girls who captivated the crowd with their colourful traditional dances and cultural dress.

The evening was a great success with much fun and enjoyment had by all, including a great opportunity for locals and RAMSI to “come together” and enjoy peace and unity for the Solomon Islands.

“My men and I were very happy and proud to help the White River locals stage the show and it was a privilege to be among them throughout the evening,” Captain Tokovou said. “The goodwill built up between us is a good step to ensuring progress and security for the Solomon Islands people.”
