RAMSI Special Coordinator James Batley today said that he remains optimistic about the future of Solomon Islands despite the recent civil unrest.

Speaking at a media conference in Honiara today, Mr Batley said that it is important that the political process can occur in Solomon Islands in a calm and stable atmosphere, according to the Constitution.

“RAMSI’s assistance to the Royal Solomon Islands Police (RSIP) to restore law and order will help bring this about,” Mr Batley said.

“I remain optimistic about the future of this wonderful country because of its extraordinary people and resources.

“While the events of recent days are certainly a setback, the partnership between RAMSI and Solomon Islands remains in place, as does the region’s commitment to help its neighbour, Solomon Islands.”

Mr Batley said that extra Australian troops were sent to Solomon Islands today following discussions between the RSIP Commissioner and the RAMSI Participating Police Force (PPF) and military contingent. He said it did not indicate that further trouble was expected.

“The reaction from Solomon Islanders to the military presence has been very positive.”

One hundred and ten extra members of the Australian Defence Force left Townsville earlier today bound for Solomon Islands to join the existing police and military components of RAMSI which include personnel from across the Pacific region.

Mr Batley also said that he hoped the people who had left the country following the violence would return.
