RAMSI Special Coordinator James Batley today said that RAMSI remains committed to working with the people and government of Solomon Islands and the top priority now is to help restore order following the serious and violent unrest in Honiara of recent days.
Speaking at a media conference in Honiara today (Thursday 20 April), Mr Batley said that military and police reinforcements had been brought in to Solomon Islands to support the Royal Solomon Islands Police.
“Today we have seen on the streets the positive impact from the reinforcements,” Mr Batley said.
“We are acting to support the restoration of the rule of law and the Constitution of Solomon Islands.
“What we have seen in recent days is a sad development for Solomon Islands which will have a big impact on the country.”
Mr Batley confirmed that he had spoken to both (then) Prime Minister-elect, the Hon Snyder Rini, and the outgoing caretaker Prime Minister, Sir Allen Kemakeza, before the decision was taken to bring in reinforcements.
Mr Batley urged Solomon Islanders to reflect on the cost of the violence of the past two days.
“There will be both short term and long term impacts. While it is too early to say what the final accounting may be, sadly it is ordinary Solomon Islanders who look like being the victims - for instance if the price of common household goods goes up.”
